Taxonomy, Phylogenetics and Evolution of Euglenids

Research topics

  • We study the diversity of green euglenids through isolating new species from the environment, microscope observations and molecular research.
  • Recreation of relationships between taxa by constructing a credible phylogenetic tree, which includes as many species as possible; so far, only about 20% of known taxa is represented on the phylogenetic trees.
  • Research on euglenid ecology by environmental sequencing (metabarcoding) using a DNA barcode developed by us, which allows a precise species identification. This is important for monitoring of water bodies specifically for euglenid diversity, in particular for species which are capable of toxic blooms, rare or of a high biotechnological potential.
